Native Plants

Garden to Grid
PHOTOGRAPHY, 3D MODELING, ANIMATION
This project explores the intersection of physical and digital environments. Inspired by Claudia West’s Planting in a Post-Wild World, I began by planting a small native garden in my front yard, using Christmas Fern, Foam Flower, and Wild Ginger (three species indigenous to my region). The goal was to reflect how native plants coexist in natural communities and then translate that concept into a digital form.

I photographed each plant and isolated the imagery in Photoshop before bringing the assets into Blender. There, I sculpted depth and form into the leaves and used the particle system to simulate organic growth—clustering variations of each plant across a shared grid. I completed the piece by adding force fields to introduce subtle, lifelike motion.

Translating photographic visuals into to 3D scenes, this project highlights my comfort working across mediums.
